68! Hail someone on 68, then tell them to switch over to any other channel beside of course 9, 11, 13, or 16. I know around here, the Coast Guard will start to communicate on 16 with vessels, then they tell them to switch over to the low 20's to finish their communications. Heard a rescue/removal of bodies from the Atlantic City Inlet in June on channel 22..you could only hear the CG side because they have the Big Radio and Antenna to match.

16 is only for emergencies.
68 is the BS/ Hailing channel. If get so busy with hailing some times, you might be better off switching right away.

You should always monitor 16, then when hailed go to 68 through 72. Anything below 16 is commercial traffic.

I just bought a Standard Horizon HX270S for $150 from West Marine
Waterproof, has a nice quick release clip that I use on my PFD.
Extra battery holder of AA for emergency, etc. Nice solid unit.
