Installing 750 Piston Rings
I bought a WSM piston kit for an SL750 and I want to know how the rings are installed.
There is a slip of paper that came with the kit that says "When installing WSM rings if there is a polished edge, it is installed in top ring groove". There doesn't seem to be a polished edge on either of the rings. On one side of the rings there is lettering of "RN". Which side goes up and which side goes down? Is there a difference between the two rings or are they both the same?
Final question, after the rings are put on the piston, which direction do the "openings" in the rings face?
Thanks for your help.

The rings are the same. They are beveled on one side, and the bevel goes up. If you look in the grooves of the piston you will see a pin. The pin is to be positioned in the ring gap to keep the ring from spinning. The arrow on the piston points towards the mag.
If you should install the rings upside down, the rings will stick inside the grooves. They should be able to move freely in the groove when compressed and released.Last edited by starflight; 06-13-2008 at 07:38 AM.

Thanks, got it. Makes perfect sense! Remind me though, which is mag, front or back?

The 'RN' etching will be facing up when properly installed for WSM kit on the 750 motor. I just did this the wrong way, and had to go back and fix it...

Be sure also when you are installing the circlips, that the open ends are facing up.
