Bulky Exhaust system
My sportster has an wierd exhaust system. From the waterbox, the pipe T's into a 2" rubber hose. one side of the T exits the boat, the other side of the T the hose runs all the way over to the oppisite side of the boat but is caped off at the end, and the same for the other engine. What is the purpose for this design? Can I remove the hose and simply install an elbow fitting? I hope I described this well enough. I just dont understand this design.

I bet it is that way by design. Probably part of the tuned pipe exhaust system for more performance. Similar to this thread and post #9 for how it works.

Here is a drawing of the design, I was wondering if I could remove the hose and Tee fitting and connect an elbow to the water box and expansion tube. More performance, better sound?

The part you are wanting to remove is called a resonator. Here is what it does. Removing it will make your boat louder, not sure how it will effect performance, but it is there for a reason.

on the pwc site I referenced before, I have heard of some removing their resonator to lighten the load and change the sound. On a boat, the relatively small load is probably not a factor. If it is easy to remove on your boat, and easy to re-install (just in case you later prefer the way it was), then why not try it and see what effect it has on sound and performance? Let us know the results of your experiment.

I removed the hoses from the T fitting, and put in an elbow fitting. I ran the engines briefly, seems to be slightly louder, will let you know how it does when I take it out and run it on the lake for a while.

Lots louder
It will rattle your teeth like any pre 99 14.5 twin. If you spend any amount
of time on the boat, you will want to keep noise down. Doubt you will see any performance improvement from removing them. Good Luck!
