Question about Epoxy and Gelcoat (help!)
Called up gelcote today and I was about to order the seadoo black
They told me sinced I used West system epoxy, that I can no longer use their gelcote because they say that the gelcote could delaminate off the epoxy.
What am i going to do now ????
They guy said that I should have stuck to the same system and used polyester resin instead to repair and keep with the same materials but I think that was a bunch of BullSh*t.
Can any fiberglass guys help answer this.
Can you put a polyester gelcote over a epoxy substrate if it is properly prepared???
Thanks

yup, it's west system epoxy to repair. I talked to many folks first before and epoxy is going to be a better especially for being more waterproof.
anyways I got into a huff. becaus the guy over at gelcote told me that it will delaminated for sure because you can't put gelcote over epoxy is what he told me.
then called west system epoxy back and set me straight. they gave me references and articles to read on why it is safe to use polyester gelcoat over epoxy.
Also informed me of the proper preparation so that I will ge the best bond.
I thinks that's good for me...

follow the West guys instructions and you'll be fine. a ski that I repaired a football sized hole in has well over 300 hrs on it with no problems with the gel coat or anything related to the epoxy. Epoxy is for sure the way to go for many reasons.
BTW, I always bought neutral gelcoat at Boaters World and mixed the black colorant with it. Much cheaper and it's hard to mix black so that it doesn't match.Last edited by GTXX; 08-08-2007 at 01:04 PM.

Hey GTXX, I too bought theat stuff from boaters world for some small bottom scratches I wanted ti fill after reading the delam posts and checking for cracks, whew, none yet, then I am thinking of sanding it smooth, then using appliance epoxy paint, will that be OK? I have read some threads and some guys have had luck with it,...your opinion sir?
