Sponson SET-Back Idea for RXP
This is an idea that was mentioned on the other fiberglass in opas area post.
So now that the area where the opas is gone and looks like part of the hull. We are thinking about Setting back the sponsons by one bolt length towards the back and filling the front most hole heading towards the bow.
This would set the sponson back by about 4 -5 inches.
This is about where the sponson is on my rxdi 2001
How will this affect the handling of the craft. I would think that it would make handling better, but worried about scrubbing speed?
Any thoughts? Thanks

Doing this actually works very well. Its also easy for the guys with RE blockoffs to do as you can drill a hole into the blockoff for the rear bolt on the sponson blade and put an aluminum or stainless spool between the blockoff and sponson blade for the bolt to go thru.

I just cut up a set of aluminum blades to toss on my ski, will move the blade back 6 inches...mounting this weekend.
Its also a design I have been fooling around with for months...that and a stepped backing plate for RXP's...

I know mrracing said that the stock sponsons moved as far back as possible and as low as possible on the hull will produce the best handling. I think moving them down may scrub speed though, but I know many racers move the sponsons back as far as possible.

So really this is not a speed issue, we would see better handling i suppose?

You will probably scrub some speed from setting them back. Are you unhappy with the way it handles now? Are you going to be racing it around bouys? Do you mind losing a little top end speed? Is it really worth the effort?
IMO the stock sponsons do just fine.

I had worx sponsons on my rxp. I had the re block offs and I made a custom backing plate for the blades and bolted them to the block offs. In turned like no other rxp turns that I have been on.
