96GTX-loss of power at near full throttle
My 96 GTX looses power at after running at 3/4+ throttle for just a few minutes (like 45 seconds). It seems like the machine is starving for gas or choking out. If i leave off the throttle or "milk" the throttle a bit, it reusmes behavior and runs well until i get to that 3/4+ throttle again. I checked the fuel filter (it wasn't dirty).
The machine runs great and performs well under lesser loads.
Any thoughts??

Still looking also
My '97 GTX is doing the same thing. At about 4500-5000 rpms, the engine surges up and down even though I have constant throttle pressure.
I've rebuilt carbs, changed fuel lines, changed spark plugs, clipped the spark plug wires and replaced boots, bypassed the fuel selector valve, and it's still acting up.
My guess is to start looking at the rectifier and ignition coil.
Anybody have a better idea?

Megawatt...your problem is the RAVES are opening and closing. That is right in the rpm range the ski transitions...turn the red caps in two clicks and see if it doesn't clear it up.
Dsandri...yours is clogged filter screens in the carbs, as previously mentioned. Disassemble and clean the carbs, and replace the fuel lines if you haven't done it yet.Last edited by 96XPSS; 09-05-2007 at 06:46 PM.

I'll give it a try
Thanks, 96XPSS. I'll adjust the RAVEs and report back.

RAVES didn't change problem
96XPSS:
I noticed my RAVES were already dialed all the way in. I also adjusted the water valve all the way in, but the ski still surges above 5000 rpm. By the way, I can get full rpm on the hose in the driveway, although I get a slight miss at the higher rpms.
I've pretty much eliminated RAVEs and fuel problems, so what's next?

If they are all the way in, then it is the problem. Back them out til they are flush with the black edges. Screwing in postpones the time they open, and all the way in makes them open at the last possible moment, causing the surging. GTX's with the 800 engines are notorious for having a surge right at a good towing speed, making it hard to keep the same speed while wakeboarding, etc.
Adjust your WRV back flush too. Too far out and it will melt couplers, and kill the bottom end.
High speed missing is normal on the hose...it is the rev limiter kicking in to prevent it getting over 7200 rpm.

Sounds like it broke a piston skirt or a rod. Eitherway, not good. You say...
