Gas & Oil Gauges = MFD Issue?
Hey Guys,
First off I wanted to say thanks to everyone. I got a 96 SL780 this past April with a blown engine. I put a 95 SLT750 engine in it and I could not have done it without everyone's help here at GH. Almost all my questions where answered by using the Search Function! She runs great except for a few minor things that I want to clear up before taking her for a weekend camping trip.
So my question is this. The MFD is reading that I have a full tank of gas, and almost no oil with the oil tank is about half full. The oil does not bother me since I already have the oil block off kit on and I will be either removing the oil tank and/of putting on a resistor to fake out the MFD, once I find that post about how to do it again.
I have run the ski down to below a 1/4 of a tank testing the engine put the gas gauge still shows full. I am thinking it has something to with the MFD since it seems like both gauges are acting up. All the other gauges seem fine except the volt gauge, it shows around 14 volts when the ski is off. And around 16 or 17 volts when running.
I am really thinking its something with the MFD or electrical but I don't what to check now. The electrical box is in good condition and the fuses look ok but I have not replaced any of them yet.
I am asking the Polaris Guru's for their wise thoughts and hope they can lead me down the path of some righteous wave riding.
Sorry for the long post, but I am just so darn happy to be here.

Steve, GREAT to have you here at The Green Hulk Forums!!
The first thing I'd do is check the resistance of the fuel and oil tanks when full or empty and find out if it's the sender units. About 33 ohms full and 240 empty.

Also get a voltmeter and check the actual voltage at the battery while the engine is running, do you get roughly 14.5 volts?

Welcome to the Hulk. Have you tried recalibrating the MFD? There is a thread for it in the tech section.

xlint89 - Did the reset of the MFD and still no help. Thought the fuse may be bad so I replaced it. No help.
ph2ocraft - I tried testing the resistance but it was giving me some weird numbers. Like 0.7. So I started looking at the fuel sender unit again ... low and behold the problem was staring me in the face. The idiot that I bought it from had put on a wire tap between the red and black wires coming out of the sender unit. But why?
Eureaka ..... I pulled the sender out of the tank and pulled float out. Then tested the float it in a glass of gas and it went down like Paris Hilton on a date at happy hour. So the idiot got tired of seeing the low fuel light come on so he put a wire tap on the wires from the sender so they would short out and show the gas gauge being full .... priceless. Snapped some pics for you guys to see.
So I need a float, where is the best place get one?Last edited by northsc; 06-30-2007 at 04:51 PM. Reason: New info.
