03 GP1300r preemptive overhaul. Am I crazy?
I picked up a low hours GPR a few years ago and am ready for some performance mods and maintenance. I have already addressed the standard hull upgrades. The engin remains stock save for the D plate and wave eater clips I installed while replacing the throttle cable that broke on me. It is currently running.
My plans are-
Re-ring at minimum. Comp was 116,112,124 last checked.
Shave Head to 150 psi
install timing advance key
Replace reeds
airbox mod or removal
replace factory oil lines
detail strip and clean PVs
I plan on pulling the entire engine to make some things easier even if a full overhaul isn’t in order. Waste of time?
finally questions-
Will factory pistons hold up to increased compression? Assuming no damage of course and with new rings.
Should I split and completely reseal the crankcase? Is it due for an old age leak?
Should I send injectors out to be cleaned? Can I do it?
Am I just crazy for “fixing” something that ain’t broke?
Thoughts?
Thanks guys. I’ve been lurking here for years.

Hopefully you will get plenty of advice, and I'm sure many will have different opinions from everyone else. But here is my $.02 for free.
Yes, take the engine out of the ski to do any work, it is much easier.
What is low hours?? I know everyone will want to know what hours you really have.
If you are replacing the rings, I'd go ahead and get new pistons, but that's just me. Especially if you're bumping the compression with a head shave.
YES, split the case and put in new seals. YES.
Everything else sounds good. I don't know much about the injectors, but if you can service them or have them looked at I'd do something with them for sure. If you're making more power with everything else, I'd hate to see it run lean and blow something up just cause the injectors are tired.

There are injector cleaning and flow testing services. I would definitely have a pro do them.
Don’t forget the PV couplers.
Hopefully WFO chimes in…. He’ll get you ripping for sure.

Thanks for the .02. That’s what I came here for. Like I said been trolling for years, just the first time I’ve felt the need to ask. I’ve read HUNDREDS of posts.
The engine is out. First time and I’m sure time well spent.
I bought it with 54.5 hrs abt 3 years ago. I think it’s sitting at around 77-78 now. I pulled the battery this fall.
I’ll likely do pistons, it’s not cost prohibitive. Mostly curious about stockers for options. So far the cylinders are nearly pristine.
I expected the consensus would be to split the case and reseal. I prob wouldn’t sleep otherwise. Hell I was nervous all summer thinking about oil lines once that got in my head.

Jonesy thanks
ive found a couple injector service companies in the past when researching my old Merc outboard. I’ll look them up if no one here has a go to.
I have the couplers in the shop. Was just too lazy to put them on when I did the clips.
im ready to rip!

WFO Rich thanks.
I thought I read the reeds were near unobtanium at this point. Good news.
I’m in for the reeds, key and… not sure what else yet. I’ll be in touch once I get it all sorted.
