Snapped Oil Filter Bolt - Resolved!

    Well,

I'm still absolutely raging right now but figured I'd reach out.

Set my torque wrench to 80 ft/lbs and began to tighten the oil filter housing bolt down after replacing the filter. Of course I read too fast and didn't make the obvious conclusion it's 80 lbs/in

What the f*** are my options.

So incredibly upset with myself right now. It felt more than 80lbs before I realized it's 80lb/in NOT ft.

Just read a similar post. I see what my options are. I will post an update with resolution afterwards.

I had good luck with reverseable drill bits the kinda catches and it backed out the broken bolts but not all the time. I never tried the oil filter cap bolt. It's worth a shot. Only thing is you will need to find a bit long enough to reach.

hmmm is this the latest candidate for the balls of steel award?

    maybe

not going after this means a shit ton of work

    my first move would be:

lots of brake cleaner and compressed air down the hole

a long ass center punch ground to a fine point

a couple of taps at the center of the bolt

    a long 10mm bolt

    a hairdryer

coat the end of the bolt with superglue, get it down there and use the hair dryer to force dry it

with some luck, the glue will hold and you'll spin he bolt out.

if it fails you are ready for the left handed drill bit

a good description and pics _might_ get you the coveted green hulk balls of steel award

btw, try to source the replacement filter bolt now, they are often on back order and surprisingly expensive

pro tip for the rest of ya.

tighten this particular bolt down with a 1/4 inch stubby racthet until snug ( make sure the filter lid is aligned, I sometimes with use a bit of pvc pip to get it halfway in), start engine, check for drippage

you ain't the first person ( or the last) to make this kind of mistake while trying to do it "the right way"

    good luck!

Shop had to tap the sheared portion of the bolt, got their bit in there and reversed it out. Took some effort as the tap barely reached inside the oil filter housing.

    Thanks to everyone for responding.

Iím kinda hazy as to what the tech actually didÖ.

Drilled a hole on the end of a long bolt and the inserted a left handed drill bit?

Or operated directly on the remains of the broken bolt

Or an autcorrect gremlin leaves us guessing
