    Impellor install question

I have a 1996 SLT700 purchased new. Have tried several performance upgrades over the years.

Currently have 700 single carb motor from a 2001 Virage in it. Have squirrlled away 5 different impellors over the years and want to try each to see if it helps speed.

Most likely candidate is a impellor from a parted Virage i.

Anyway, impellor was still bolted to stator from when I pulled it and it wouldn't turn. Thought it was a locked up bearing. I loosened the impellor and bearings turn freely, but when I tighten the impellor, it bottoms out on the stator and will not turn once tightened. Have 4 other used stators and tried this with other impellors and stators. 3 do not allow impellor to bottom out on stator and 2 do. Of course the best condition stators are the 2 that bottom out. I looked up an exploded view of the pump thinking a spacer may be missing, but everything is correct.

What keeps the impellor shaft from floating back and forth? Assuming that is what is going on with 2 of the stators.

The impeller stub shaft in the stator, has the "flats" end (under the cone).
It goes through rear bearing, middle spacer, front bearing, then there is a spacer that slides over the shaft and rides inside the dual seals, then the impeller tightens it all together. When tight, should spin smoothly... no front/back play.

    Cheers!

This does happen sometimes. The base of the impeller may be bottoming out on the stator. Or the trailing edge of the impeller blades may be contacting the vanes of the pump.

You may need to add a shim or shims on the stub shaft before installing the impeller.

    Pictures would help
