Back fire is often caused from an exhaust leak. the unburned fuel reaches oxegen that leaks in and explodes. It also caused from running lean, but if the D-plate is all you did, its probably not lean.
Also was that on the trailer or in the water? I have had backfires when on the trailer because the ignition is retarded for safety when theres know resistance to the prop.

Check for exhaust leaks and make sure all your clamps and couplers are tight and its not leaking around the d-plate in case one of the gaskets were damaged. Then try it out on the water and see if it continues. If so, let us know and we can go from there.

Mine backfired one time while I was at the ramp. I had just recently took the d-plate out and opened it up a tad. I also didn't have my EFI controller plugged in. The ski ran horrible that day.
I ended up buying some VF3's and taking everything apart. After I put it all back together it works flawlessly.

TPS is common. Usually you will some sort of light though.
Does it do it in the water, or just on the trailer ?
