FX HO 2013 Midshaft bolts issue!!!

Hi guy's

I don’t know if anyone had this unpleasant experience with his midshaft housing! Mine certainly tested my limits !

So, had to remove this midshaft to replace this see small clip!

Went to remove the three holding bolts and the bolt head broke leaving the full thread inside the housing! Anyway, this operation took 4 plus hours, I had to slowly grind the housing as one can see below. I now have three headless bolts still stuck to the hull divider. I will try to slowly remove these with a gripper (hopefully they wont break flush) as I won’t be able to grip them! Do you have any suggestion on the best way to safely remove these? I cant use heat, so was thinking of using dry ice (-60)



When removing the housing I did some minor damage to the divider (I don’t know the exact word for this) but I am referring to the below.




What are your views, I was thinking of using some epoxy to fill the small dents that I did while prying the housing.the sand this to a nice smooth finish?

If I wont manage to get these out can I drill and remove the three blind nuts and bolt this in with washers and locking nuts (front to rear)

I will try to take a couple of photos to show you the situation on the locked bolts.

That stinks. My suggestion is to do nothing for the next few days except for soaking those bolts with penetrating oil. Like you said, if they break again you are going to have a bigger problem.

Not too long ago another member posted about his mid-wall repair after a difficult housing removal.

If you can find that thread it had good photos of the damage and the repair process.

Would be using multiple kinds of penetrating oil. and could possibly heat with soldering iron holding it on each bolt for a while. Not sure if they would help or hurt but wanted to mention it as getting a torch in there is not really an option.

Micro flame torch has been useful for me in the past. In my case I just needed to cook each bolt enough to achieve the breakdown temp of the thread locking compound.

The micro torch flame is very narrow and can be applied directly to the bolt ends.

Soldering iron may not have enough heat, depends on the wattage I suppose.

Totally even better. just was trying to share the idea of something electric to heat each bolt one at a time with out flame inside the hull.

Heat & freezing, along with penetrating oil, may work.

Following that, use an end mill with a drill bushing to get the top of the broken bolt flat, then try a left-hand drill bit with a drill bushing.

If you just can't get it out, there's nothing that says you have to use the original holes. Rotate the bearing housing and drill new holes. Install longer bolts and nuts on the back side (if you can get to it). Not sure if it's accessible, a I've only seen this problem with with the Yamaha boats. If it's not accessible from the back, you may have to try using expanding nut inserts or gluing in nuts.

Whatever way you get this accomplished, be sure to put anti-seize compound on the bolts!

Yes its very easily accessible from the rear, so through bolt would work.

I try to remove these first (fingers crossed) I will manage
