Race Boat Resurrection - Pro 785 Version 2.0

Does anybody remember this boat from years ago?? It was Jim Pierce's superstock boat that won many titles. Well take one guess where it is now...

I will take some this weekend when I start tearing it down. It is a little rough and will need a complete rebuild. The MAG piston has a hole blown in it and the other two definitely need new pistons. It also looks like the cylinders will need a replate. The hull structurally looks very good but it could probably use a new paint job if I want it to look pretty. It is a factory lightweight hull so I will be definitely using it.

I got a PM from a gentlemen in California that had it and was looking for some tips on rebuilding it. I'm not too sure of the story on how he got it but it is now residing in Texas.

    Awesome.

    1. What's with the addition at the top of the hood? Does it have the stand up steering set up?

    2. I see Hot seat pipes, most likely HS gas valves, and Hot Seat head. Does it have the HS waterbox?

    3. What carbs are those? Red Tops or HS rifle bore?

    4. What intake grate and ride plate is that using?

    5. Any trim tabs?

She has all sorts of goodies on her...

It has a carbon fiber hood that has a splash shield. There is a big hole cut in the top of the hood for air flow so that keeps water from directly splashing in through the hood. The steering looks to be just a normal UMI setup.

Hot Seat pipes, Watcon gas valve, Hot Seat head with supposed 180 psi domes. The exhaust is a straight metal pipe directly out the back from the front collector. No water box!

The carbs are 44mm Blackjacks with external pumps and a Novi air/fuel separator.

The handling / pump mods are Worx sponsons, Hot Seat ride plate, JD intake grate, Watcon manual trim, Skat Trak nozzle, 6 vane stator, 12/18 Skat Trak prop and fixed Evolution Marine tabs.

When you pull it apart, check the mag piston bearings very carefully. Bring the rod up to TDC and rotate the rod back and forth on the journall to see if it is notchy. Those Pros were prone to hydrolocking the front cylinder when loading on a triler if the trailer was tilted enough. The mag pipe would dump all of its water into the cyl, and the owner wouldn't know till the next time they started it. It's enough to dent the lower rod bearing.

Here are some updates from the past few weeks. I'm now at the point where I need the motor completely rebuilt and the hull needs some work.

I have the hull completely stripped down with everything completely removed. It has not been cleaned and degreased yet but it will be coming next. There are a few spots that need some fiberglass repair up by the gas tank where the hold down clips ripped through. Also the collector cradle needs some attention where it has rubbed through the fiberglass.

All the parts have been completely degreased and put into small baggies for installation later. Gotta keep it all organized!

Hot Seat pipes with the straight through exhaust pipe that deletes the waterbox. I'm thinking I will have the pipe powder coated.

Here is the total loss setup with the front cover mounted pickups. My other ski has the pickups behind the flywheel but this one has it in the front. Very slick setup that is easy to get the initial static timing dialed in.

I hooked up the MSD to get an idea of the timing curve. It looks to be a pretty aggressive timing curve down low but it has a lot of timing retard up top.

I'm not sure who made this flywheel but it is damn light! I think it is about a pound and a half in weight...maybe two.
