GP 1800 impeller removal problem
I pulled the jet pump assembly and took it to a yamaha dealership for them to remove the solas impeller and replace the stator duct unit behind the impeller. I honestly tried to remove the impeller myself using a vice and a 6 foot metal fence pole as a breaker bar and was unsuccessful even applying heat. So I figured the dealership had some other tricks up their sleeve but they called and said they couldn't complete the job because they broke their vice trying to remove it. Any other tricks to getting these off so I don't have to cut off the impeller?
I've taken these off a few times but this one is kicking my ass. It's on a stage 3 GP so it's had some nasty power put to it.
Thanks

You guy's are both very creative! I need to try one of these tomorrow and hopefully save my impeller! Thank you for the ideas.

I would recommend you dont use heat because you have 2 seals right behind the thread and you will roast them. Apply anti seize and tighten the shit out of it, next time it will be easy to remove, it be tight but will still come out.

Make sure you tighten it as much as you can to torque spec. The closer you are the easier they come off I have found. If you dont, because its reverse thread the torque of it spinning will tighten it.

I never have tightened it really hard when I installed it so I like that idea and will use it in the future. Have any of you guys broken the Solas tool because I broke 2? If you don’t use heat what else would you recommend because this bad boy does not want to come off.

There is a recommended torque spec for installing the impeller and it is quite a lot. Installing the impeller with the proper torque is the thing to do.
Yamaha had a problem a few years back where some under-torqued impellers from the factory were loosening themselves and causing damage. Sometimes during the first engine run.
I use a thin coating of anti-seize on the driveshaft threads before installing the impeller.
No longer available, I also use the split washer that R&D used to make. That double layer washer replaces the factory washer right behind the impeller and really reduced the amount of effort needed to crack the impeller loose.
If your impeller is really, really bound up on the driveshaft threads you may be faced with the choice of cutting the impeller off or using a lot of heat and then rebuilding the stator with new seals. And possibly replacing the bearings at the same time, which you are in there.
Is this a salt water jet pump you are trying to remove the Solas impeller from? How long has it been on there?
