    Looking at 3 different skis

    Hey guys,

    I am looking at 3 different skis at the moment. All around the 1200 to 1500 range. All are said to run and ready to go. Just wanted some opinions on these models. I know I would need to do a compression test and hopefully a water run although everyone is winterizing at the moment here. The 3 models are a spotless 2000 gtx rfi with 248 hours and battery charging issue. A 1997 GTX also with a charging issue that the owner thinks has a stator problem and will throw one in. I thought maybe it could be a rectifier. Typical Craigslist seller though. He is kind of a jerk and pushy for a sale. The other is a 1999 GTX that is red with a red hull. I am thinking it is around a 98 or 99. I will get more info on this one tomorrow. Just wondering if any if these I should stay away from etc. Any help would be appreciated. Just doing my homework before driving 40-50 miles to check them out. Thanks again guys.

    Take the 1997 GTX. You'll be happier. Don't even look at the red one it is a 951. The RFI if it has not had a top end it needs one now.

    You've picked a good hull to buy. Like mentioned above, the 951 engine in the '99 is known to be less reliable than the 787. They do have noticeably more power but the carburetion is finicky and the durability of the bottom end of the engine is not stellar. I would also avoid the RFI because special tools are required to diagnose and repair the system.

    Thanks guys, this is a great help. You guys have always been good. I had a 97 GTX in the past and this hull really works for us because there are always multiple riders and it is very stable in the salt water where I am located. Anything else would be greatly appreciated. I haven't heard back on the 951 yet but will call when I get out of work.

    I don't really have anything to add to Pro1200. He hit the most important aspects. I knew the 99 XP was a stay away from because of water ingestion with the 951, but did not know that there were issues with the 99 951 motor anymore than later years.

    The only thing that you have to remember is that the 97 GTX has a known charging issue that will cost you some money to repair. At $1500, any repair will add a good percentage of your acquisition cost. As the original owner of a 200+ hour 03 DI unit, I would not write off the RFI if it is running well. Sure, if it starts acting up, you will be into it more than its worth immediately.

    I would want the 951 engine over the 787 personally. I have both a 96 GTX with a 787 and a 98 GTXL with a 951. You can feel the difference in power between the two and if I had to choose one, it would be the 951 ski.
