the chain tool is nice, but I’ve rebuilt many by using a hammer to peen the new link. I like to use the inertia of a weighty pry bar gently positioned behind the rocker tower to go behind the new link while I’m smacking the pins on the other side. They often come out visibly perfect and stronger than the links that are factory assembled elsewhere in the chain.

The chain tool is very nice, and does a professional job, but I have had many customers that did it exactly like this with excellent results.
You can measure the width of the chain links, and then check your "peened" link to make sure it's close to the same.. If you make it "too narrow", just tap the pins from the backside wit a flat punch, and the links will open up a bit. Good photos!!

you could try to rent it by any mercedes dealer, they have this set to service 2.2 diesel engines without taking it apart, but most the time it lays around

Well we decided it was time to start getting these engines built and ready for summer. We’re starting on the one for the red ski. Had the intermediate gear failure last year. Then had a over heat problem after being replaced. A lot of guy on here said the head gaskets are temperamental and it probably took that out when the gear went. So tonight we ripped into it... we don’t see a real definite trail of a blowout but we’re this far so either way it’s getting done now lol

Measure the width of the original chain links right by the peened rivets. Then measure the width of the ones you just peened. If they are too wide; peen them some more..
If they are too narrow, take a flat punch, and tap on the backside of the rivet and push it out a bit. They just have to be close; not perfect..
If you make them "too narrow" that is a bigger risk as the chain could possibly bind.

Well looks like we had missed a couple pieces of the gear the first time around. To be fair that gear exploded into nothing! Good thing the filter did it’s job.
