Question STX-160 'Hood Bonnet Fix' Questions

    Hey Guys,

New to the forum and looking to buy my first ski. There is an STX-160 local to me that I was planning on looking at this weekend.

My only reservations are really the hood issues that a few people seem to be having. How much of a risk is the hood flying off and are there any way to stop it before it happens?

K-Speed released a "Hood Bonnet Fix" for this not too long ago. Does this solve all the problems? Any stateside resellers?

    Thanks!

I bought both STX160 and STX160LX not knowing about the front lid issues. I simply loosen a nut under the lid and another on the ski and attached a 100lb test fishing line and re-tighten as a precaution. I will post a picture when I get home. It would not stop me from looking at it, the STX160 rides and performs awesome. Is it new or used?

Brand new. Seems like the best new ski you can get at the price point. This the the only is think that would be holding me up I think.

What's happening to these things? Are the hinges coming apart?

I'd be afraid that, if it came loose at high speed, that it would just flop around in the wind with that line on it. It would probably damage the hood, the front part of the hull, and it might even hit you!

I'd look into filling the hood with closed cell foam so that it will float.

I only learned about this on the PWCForum. Someone posted losing the entire front lid including the hinge while moving at idle and got hit by a wake. Another person said same thing happened to them. Kawasaki is replacing it under warranty and apparently it’s a known issue.

Not a bad idea to inject with foam to help it float.

Don't use the foam that expands a lot or it may split the pieces apart. They make a low expansion spray foam, but I'd try to find a sheet of closed cell foam and cut it to fit, then glue it in place.

That product is interesting. Anyone have this? Are there any videos on installation or seeing it in use. I see it replaces the entire chrome front end which takes the bling level down a bit lol. If it’s a legit fix it’s worth the price to ship though.

Well known problem unfortunately. When the nose of the jetski dives into the water, the binding literally tears with the pressure of the water entering under the hood.
Kawasaki already has a solution here in Europe, you need to contact them.

I also heard that a RECALL should take place ...

Just received this in the mail. At the moment it’s “STOP RIDING until an authorized Repaired has been completed” HOWEVER, Kawasaki is still working on the procedure on how to fix the issue.
