    02 Virage 700 piston failure ?

    Hey everybody
I have an 02 virage 700 single carb engine . I rebuilt the top end 12 hours ago and the same piston blew up on me the other day. I ordered everything to rebuild this cylinder but Iím trying to figure out what caused it. Iíve always had a problem of low end bog but once I hit the throttle a few times it would get up and go fine. I messed with the carb and started it up and it revved basically to redline and I feel like thatís what caused this to blow. Looking for some insight from any Click image for larger version.

Looks like it's getting too hot, probably too lean. Note the pitting on the exhaust side of the piston, black spot on the bottom, and what looks like a four-point seizure. Looks like too lean causing too hot.

if you ever have any sort of bog or hesitation, stop riding immediately. You have a fuel problem and it's just a matter of time before you are rebuilding.

Not sure what you have going on there as far as your original problem, But that engine needs to be torn down to the crank now. You’ve had foreign debris and bearing material smash the top of that piston. Somethings coming apart. When you did the rebuild, what did you set your piston to cylinder wall clearance at?

Just realized that this is the second but same piston. Motor needs complete teardown. Donít even try to get away without taking it right down to the crankshaft. Sorry.

Were did you get that piston? I don’t think it’s the right piston for that motor either
