Mounting a fish finder on a 2018 VXHO Cruiser. HOW?

Just got this 2018 VX cruiser HO and the PO had mounted a ram mount right of the steering and from the bouncing it had broken all the plastic there. So after I replace that where is a better mounting place. The transducer is mounted and fine, thats not the issue.

I like the RAM mount idea but where.

Here are some details on how I mount my Garmin 95SV on GP1800.

    http://greenhulk.net/forums/showthre...=1#post3058196

I have two RAM ball mounts, one on each side of the upper cowling. I normally have the GPS mounted on the left side so I can reach the buttons and touch screen with my left hand while steering and throttle control with right hand.

Hole saw opening is just a bit larger than the 1/5” ball, so the ball extends through the cowling from below. Fairly rigid result but obviously limited by how structural and rigid the surrounding plastic is. ...
The cowling has a large hole and the 1.5” ball mount is supported from underneath.

    Left side mount

Since my Garmin model is a large and heavy unit there is some flex in the cowling plastic around the mounting rivets. Some flex/stress cracking has occurred. Not sure why I used rivets rather than SS screws with fender washers and nylock nuts
I had to trim the metal plate to fit into the underside shape of the cowling plastic. Grinder and file work.

I removed the side trim panels from both ski sides to provide access and visibility while working in there. Glovebox and seat also removed.

So far it has been working for about 200 riding hours including more than a few trips on rough water at speed.

If I was to do this again I would somehow support the ball mount from the actual upper deck structure below which also supports the steering column base, rather than just using the thin black plastic cowling material to support the weight of my large GPS.

For a less heavy (smaller) chart plotter I think the shroud/cowling by itself has enough strength, provided the large RAM mounting plate is used to distribute the stress forces across a broader area.

The mount? The plastic part that holds the actual Garmin?

    Posted in the linked thread.

I did exactly the same as the previous owner on my ski ('18 GP1800) but on the left side and I cut some reinforcement plates out and placed them underneath the plastic just to give it more support. Done 10hrs like that so far and haven't had any issues with a Garmin 43CV.
