Cool Hello! 03 GTX 4TEC SC Project! Rebuild or Swap? General Advice Please

    Hi all,

First off, want to say thanks to this community for having so much knowledge and valuable information in one spot.

I just purchased my first PWC, a weekend project worthy 2003 GTX 4TEC SC with...461 hours. Came with the trailer for $1,000.
I'll be getting more in-depth with diagnostics tomorrow and hope to keep this thread going throughout the process with pictures on restoring the ski back to her glory.
Current game-plan is to have everything running by Memorial Day. Definitely mechanically inclined enough to do all the work myself, and understand there will be a few specialty tool investments if I end up going that route. Tentatively the overall budget for me is to stay under $3,000....but we all know how that goes!

I'm looking to get some advice on which route to take with the engine, as well as get some basic questions answered:

1- What is the typical life-span of these engines? Have we seen these engines with 1,000+ hours?
2- What are some must-inspect aspects of the PWC to begin the process?
3- Common issues with 2003 or GTX 4Tec's in general?
4- Rebuild vs Re-manufactured swap? Thoughts? Advice on kits or companies for reman?
5- What are some must-do budget upgrades? (I'm assuming they didn't have everything figured out in 2003)
6- My Hull Number: ZZN23023B303 any significance to this?

Thanks to anyone who is willing to help me along this journey!
    Pics below as promised!

If it were me. Sell it for parts and move on.
Hull is done, it's a 2 layer Hull and it's worn out, the structural integrity is gone.
Looks like the super charger is the original unit.
Cost to bring it up to reliable transportation is far more than it's worth.

Sorry. But if you really want to keep it, your looking at thousands to bring it back to former glory. Then is only a 185 hp machine.

Here's one with 800 hours running strong:

BTW, your ski retails for about $2700 w/o trailer in good running condition.

At least you got a trailer.

Ah come on, those are no-fun answers!
I wish I could get a Jet Ski in Lake Tahoe for $2,700, those are FL prices.

Onward with the weekend project... engine pulled, surprisingly clean from initial impression, no bad smells, no metal shavings, etc.. Will take a closer look next weekend. Any advice on common failures w/ these engines or specifics to take a closer look at would be helpful

Hull wise - thoughts are; no obvious water retention damage, sounds pretty sturdy when banging on her! I don't think she spent much time in the water post previous owners piss-poor fiberglass work. Next step is to cut/grind sand everything open and take a better look. Current thoughts are run 8ish layers of 12" W x 3' 8-10oz fiberglass cloth w/ West Systems 105-B + 207-B or maybe go with AWLGrip...Plus lots of sanding. Any brand recommendations with fiberglass cloth or this part of the process?

Afterwards, interested in everyone's opinion in regards to POR15 Bed Liner (Sanded smooth) vs GelCote vs other options.

Note: This is a project I enjoy spending time on, I figured the best way to learn about PWC's is to tackle on a junker from the ground up. And I'm stubborn enough to go through with it to the finish, with condescending comments and all. So any help is appreciated and I'm happy to answer any questions for anyone else taking up a similar project.
