    Up in smoke

96 700 Sl melted the wires from front of engine to the electrical boxes!!! By reading other stuff, I'm guessing I need new stater thing and a black box or two. The ski is in great shape , I mean really good and the engine is original with 120 psi in both holes. I'm wondering if I'm chasing a dead frog or if I have a Princess ?

    Any thoughts would be welcome

    Thanks

By the way I'm kind of new to this stuff...........

the vital plastic cover for the battery was not used and the battery box touched the hot side of the battery.

questionable cost of repair vs. value. Unless it's a stunning example of a ski

and of course not being an experienced tech means some significant challenges await oif you opt to go ahead with this

I quoted a price to a guy with a garage find 95 that was absolutely mind. His dad passed and he wasn't aware what the battery cover was, even thou it was sitting right where the battery went

he looked at me oddly said thanks and left without another word. His was the triple model 750 and the labor was going to be big as there was zero room to work on the stator without pulling the engine

the parts are fairly valuable especially pump/driveshaft, seat and info gauge

good winter project if you want to tear into it.

The factory electrical system on 1996 red engine watercraft is known to fail. Specifically the original magneto stator.

If the stator in that 1995 red engine was original, an upgrade to the revised ‘update kit’ stator would have been advised. Since the stator wiring has now burned, replacing the stator with the newer ‘Generation III’ type is the path forward.

Gen III stator update must also include a Gen III CDI ignition module and a Gen III style ignition coil. None* of the original Gen 1 ignition components can be used with a Gen III ignition system.

The Gen III CDI and ignition are available new as genuine OEM spec parts.

New stators are mostly aftermarket, and we have seen multiple reports that some of them do not work properly, right out of the box.

Good used genuine Polaris/PVL Gen III stator would be the preferred option, just make sure it is Gen III type and for the two cylinder engine. The three cylinder stator will not work on two cylinder red engine.

Polaris did allow Gen I ignition coil to be used with some early update kits, but sometimes this caused problems. So the Gen III ignition coil was added to the update kit for two cylinder red engines.

Stator diagnostic info via the link.

Gen III red engine OEM stators have different coil ohms from the older stator versions.

This post started for a red 700 DOMESTIC engine.
Your other posts are for 650-750 blue Fuji engines.
