Ok guys need your help on a 2 stroke ski

99 xlt 1200 limited

ski will start up. Idles out of no make zone. As soon as he gets on it ski goes for a little bit then shuts off. Sits there a while then ski will start up and idle as long as he wants then as soon as he throttles it same thing. Have heard everything from CDI box to stator to coil packs. Is it electrical or what are the common issues with these need your help. Ski is immaculate for as old as it is no corrosion or nothing. Lmk you thoughts.

It could be a number of things but I would look at fuel flow first (fuel filter and carbs). When is the last time these carburetors have been rebuilt? There could be some type of restriction..jets or carb filters. Also, make sure you have water by passing out the left side of the ski.

I believe this is a power valve motor that has a small catalytic filter in the exhaust. I have not messed with a lot of the power valve motors but I’m sure others can chime in if there was an issue with power valves sticking or maybe a clogged catalytic.

Start off by checking the tank vent valve. As soon as the ski quits, open the gas cap, see if the tank is in a vacuum. If it is, replace the rollover check valve on the fuel tank. Several other things to check, o e of them is the flapper on the pickup tube. Remove the pickup tube, remove the flapper.

Update. Guy said when ski shuts off it shows VOLT on the dash and ski won’t start. Give it a minute ski starts can idle all day as soon as he revs it ski shuts off. Battery is brand new.

Stator breaking down ? Causing a short/high impedance fault in electrical system....?
