Sea Doo 230 and 300 maintenance free superchargers explained

For those of you with 230 and 300 skis with the “Maintenance Free” superchargers. There seems to be some confusion, I see this a lot, people confuse “maintenance free” with “it lasts forever”


Sea Doo calls it “maintenance free” because the entire rotating assembly is balanced together (shaft/gear/clutch washers) and this balance procedure can’t be done with a rebuild, therefore Seadoo doesn’t offer rebuild parts for these superchargers.


When your 230 or 300 “maintenance free” superchargers wears out, or breaks, and it will! Then toss it in the garbage and replace with with a new “maintenance free” supercharger.


You will still want to do maintenance on your “maintenance free” supercharger at 200 hours and check and set the slip on the clutch. This is easily done with the double nut system on the 230/300 supercharger.
Simply use the 230/300 gear holding tool and use a dial type torque wrench to spin the impeller nut counter clockwise to check the point at which the clutch slips. This is called the “slip moment”
You can then loosen the second lock nut, tighten the main nut to achieve the proper slip moment and then tighten up the lock nut.
General rule of thumb is you want 1 ft point of slip moment for every 1 psi boost pressure anticipated.


Don’t fool yourself into thinking your supercharger will last forever. It won’t!

yeah you should seen the face of one of my regulars who bought a 300 last year.

Looked him square in the face and told him your operating costs per hour just went up considerably

but look on the light side, they make fantastic paperweights with a backstory

Are bearings any better than 260 scs bearings? If not...after 2 yrs...possible boom!

I did a post a while back asking what kind of hours people where getting and it was in to the 300s. If that’s the case at $450 a rebuild every 100 hours it kinda equals out..

What’s the most amount of hours anyone’s seen on these ?

Now BRP is telling you different....those are "special bearings, matched and balanced....as only we can do"

in other words, best keep an eye on it cause it's likely to blow up as fast as your standard charger does

Jerry, quick question. I just winterized a 2011 Speedster200 for a customer of mine, twin 255's. Boat has 102 hours, chargers feel tight, 78in lbs slip on each. He wants to leave it til next winter, what do you think?

Its a risk item.. I rebuild one a while back that had many years, and with 150 hours on the original rebuild (Most updated kit). It was just like new, even the slip was dead on. I guess its a combo of how its driven and the RISK factor that it can really fail anytime..
