2001 Sportster LE - Probe on battery blew up?

    Hi everyone,

I just bought a 2001 Seadoo LE from a guy here in Ottawa. He couldn't start it when we were looking at it but took it anyways since it was part of an amazing package deal with a 2003 Polaris Freedom and 2004 Seadoo GTI.

Anyways, brought it home and tried starting it myself. Engine starts to turn but wouldn't get going. Go to turn it off but the stop button doesn't work. Tried the kill switch and still the engine keeps turning. Eventually the negative probe on the battery turns red and just melts off. Only then did the machine turn off. Pretty sure this guy messed with the electrical, and I would like to take a look and see if I can fix it myself. Anyone have any suggestions on where to start? Or, if you have any ideas as to why this happened it would be very helpful!

Start solenoid may have failed, become stuck in the continuous crank mode.

Does the start solenoid have a metal mounting plate riveted on as part of the solenoid? If yes, the solenoid may have corroded internally.

Yeah I went to the mechanic and they said that might be the issue. Just looked at the panel and there is a mounting plate. The guy has tried jumping it by using a screwdriver, and the bolt/nut/wire are all pretty damaged. Do you think this is causing it then? If it is, where can I get a new solenoid?

Well, any Seadoo dealer should be able to sell you a replacement solenoid.

Any wiring damage from the excessive current flow must be repaired.

Plus a new battery, I would expect .
