Removing front oil pump housing, do you need to drain oil?

Is the engine crankcase oil level low enough that it won't leak with the cover off? I don't want a mess in the hull but if needed I'll drain it.

No, the oil will come out front. About 2 quarts as there is about 5 quarts total in the engine.

If you have a trailer you could just leave the trailer tipped back & prop it up maybe ...

I think the gasket under the housing is leaking, have constant fresh oil residue below the housing so I'm going to replace that $7 gasket. Pretty sure it's not the oring beind the mount since that's a brand new oring back during winter build. I'll extract the oil before taking it off, just wanted to check if I can get away with leaving oil as is, guess not.

That makes sense and you may not get ALL the residual oil out anyway from the scavenge pump area, since some will be in the rear oil pump and sump area. It may not be as big a mess as you think.

Pig oil blanket under the work area would work well.

Yes, you can leave the oil in. Tilt the trailer as much as the wheel jack will allow, little to no oil will come out. I just did this a month ago.
