No more mechanical work yet, but the body work is coming along nicely.

    Final bodywork before spraying begins...

Then got it into primer. Mostly went well, but did get a couple of places I had to sand out some sags.

Some sanding and then the second coat of primer was drama free. After that, time for some top coat. Laying it down in my “paint booth”, and then a pic back in the shop.

I’m going to lay down one more coat of paint just for good measure and call that part done. If I get REALLY board I may cut and polish the final coat, but honestly that's just silly overkill for this level of project. Really wish I was painting in a booth just for sake of keeping bugs out of the paint, but they sand out easy enough, so not a big deal. The Rustoleum Marine sprays nice thru the Harbor Freight HVLP gun. The plastics I ended up taking to a buddy’s body shop, and I should have those back late this week.

Still aiming to have it in the water over Labor Day weekend.

Second coat of paint laid down nicer than the first. I laid it on a little thicker and it flowed out better. Totally acceptable gloss. That said, I did get one sag and there are a handful of bugs that gave their life for this project, so any tips on sanding and polishing those out? Never played with this paint before.

    Reassembly has begun.

Couple of pics of the adapter I 3D printed to mount the older fuel gauge in the original pod...

Also, I can't post in the classifieds yet, but does anyone have a windscreen for one of these in decent shape? Mine was crazed and in generally horrible shape, so I was going to just have the body shop paint it blue with the rest of the plastics. But they said it is giving them fits. Won't hold the paint at all.

    Getting close.

Fuel Gauge from the 90-something waverunner installed via the 3D printed adapter that I bodyworked and finished in satin black.

Installed the HydroTurf traction mats. Seven of them were fine, but a couple needed some trimming to properly fit the recess in the hull. Still need to rivet the rear rub strip back on and install the rooster tail.

The kid is getting excited. I’m only a few hours before I hit a stopping point on the restoration and can’t go further without the plastics from the body shop. Talked to them today - They are in primer and should be painted Monday. So we’re looking good for next weekend.

Once I get what I can back together I’ll dig into the oil pump delete. I didn’t want to complicate things by pulling mechanical stuff apart while I still was working on bodywork. Didn’t get my hands on the other recommendations yet. Gonna roll the dice on those for now.

I like to wait as long as possible to cut-n-buff new paint. Hot days sitting in direct sun helps speed up the cure. New paint has a tendency to shrink in some. You don't want to get it looking good just to start seeing orange peel and sanding marks 3 weeks later!

Getting close. She’s legal and watertight.

Also went ahead and converted to premix.

Bodywork should be done today or tomorrow. She’s got a date with the lake this weekend. Let’s hope I’m riding and not swimming.

Suuuuper close to done. The body shop did a great job on the fairings and glovebox and I got them installed this evening, along with replacing the fuel filter since brown Santa got it here today. Only piece missing is the windscreen. The old one was not salvageable, so a junkyard one is on the way. In theory it arrives tomorrow, but this thing is seeing water on Saturday with or without it.
