717 GS Rotary valve cover recondition

Rotary valve cover was badly scored on 98 GS 717, so I remachined faces and set RV clearance to .012" per shop manual. My question is, the OEM cover had grooves in the face for the oil to stick to. Is this necessary? Does SBT do something to the face when the recondition them? I figure I can drag it once across a piece of course grit sand paper on a surface plate to put some grooves in it if need be. From the looks of the OEM ones it doesn't look any more extravagant than that. But is it necessary or should I just leave it smooth?
