    Broken reed = tear down?

So I found I have broken petals that are missing from one of the reed assemblies. Does this mean I now have to tear down the engine to find the missing parts? I thought I remembered someone saying that most times they will flow out the exhaust..... but I want to get the correct way of fixing this.

Not if they are fiber. They get broken up and spit out without causing any damage.

these are stainless.....guess that means a rebuild. I have a bore scope I'll try to use to find it first. Maybe i'll see it and it will be easy to retrieve. Otherwise If I'm pulling parts off to find this missing reed what should I go ahead and replace while I am in there?

I tried the bore scope but it was to big so that was a no go. Guess I will start looking at the service manual to figure out how this thing comes apart. I assume I can do this all while the engine is still in the hull or should I remove it?

First, pull the head, there's a chance they passed through with minimal damage. Then you can see down the cylinders and even into the ports.

I did just as you have suggested. Top of the piston has a few nicks that I can only assume are from the petals. I was able to get the bore scope into the crank area and all looks good. I am going to just install new reeds and gaskets and see what happens. This ski is new to me. The PO said it stopped running on the way back one day. So this petal could have been gone all along. Maybe thats why it would idle fine and then rev high on the trailer. Time will tell....
