my turn, part it or fix it
just came into a 2006 15f with 100 hours. Got a chance to try out my new endoscope. Had low compression and a couple of smashed sparkplugs
from the images I could get, looks like a broken piston ring top of the piston has speckling damage. Compression at 60psi, engine cranks normally, fuel pump is shot
the book value is pretty good, the cosmetics are pretty good, but I'm wondering if its worth the effort to pull the engine and all of that.
I expect I'll need to have the head replaced and a set of pistons, maybe a bore job too.
I don't really need a winter project, but I happen to covet the opportunity to own one of these again.
From what I've sniffed out, it seems that this year engine had a problem with broken pistons
if I part it, I'll still have to pull the engine to dispose of the hull. and that's not cheap in my neck of the woods.

12f had the piston problem. The 15 f is very reliable. Have to replace or re Nicasil the cylinders. I have a head and I think I have good cylinders also.
Fuel pumps are cheap. Rebuild it.

Definitely part it out, its 13 years old & needs an engine, you can buy one a couple years old for what it will cost you to get it going again.

Guess it depends on what you charge yourself for labor.

I did see somebody that paid 4k for I believe a 2014 model
i don't get much of a labor discount actually, I sure as shine can't work for free
if I did find a good looking one for 4k, it would be my luck to throw a rod the first week I had it on the water
and she is an old girl.
I'd prefer a gti 130 actually..more my speed and I'm always looking for an elusive SUV that hasn't been hacked by some shade tree idiot

You know, I think an SUV with a 4-stroke might be interesting.

If you always wanted the 15f then I’d rebuild it. That way you know it’s history and will have plenty of life out of it. Then again, that’s my remote island mentality. If things are cheap and abundant then disposing and getting new is much easier.

Good thing is, you can have that engine out in about 2-3 hours. I'd go ahead and pull it. Then tear it down and assess damage. Who knows, might not be all that bad??

I'd have to pull it to dispose of the hull, as I mentioned, So I'll likely start back at the pump and work my way into the engine. for all I know the pump bearings are shot.
it rolled into my place looking for a locker queen startup, went to shit as soon as I saw two of the plugs were damaged, low compression and failed fuel pump. Kinda surprised it didn't toss a rod, but hey, that's my good fortune.
Of course fresh motor is always a good thing, stay tuned.....
I'll post in the classified if/when I start the part out
