05-17' VXR / GP1800 EASY Intake Grate Insert Removal

2015-17 VXR owners and 2017-18 GP1800 intake grate rear insert removal. I figured I'd share my experience removing these, and just how easy of a job it can be. The pictures pretty much sum it up. I wanted to remove these inserts without any cutting, grinding, chipping away, etc in effort to limit the mess in doing so.

    In short:

-remove anything necessary that would be in the way of accessing the inserts
-unstrap the rear of your ski if it is strapped down to the trailer
-get a floor jack or anything you can use to apply constant pressure from the bottom of the ski to the bolts shown ( I have a bunch of Yamaha misc bolts from builds, and found exhaust manifold bolts worked perfectly limiting the thickness of wood needed to chock the area on the jack)
-apply even pressure across all 4 bolts until you see the leaf springs on the trailer in a more relaxed state with the jack
-put a little more pressure on the bolts with the jack after that
*NOT enough to lift the ski off the trailer being the thin nano material would probably splinter

*DO NOT SIT OR PUT ANY ADDITIONAL WEIGHT ON THE SKI, BEING ALL IT'S WEIGHT IS CURRENTLY BEING DISPLACED OVER THE 4 BOLTS IN THE INSERTS NOW
-use a chair or something that allows you to lean far enough into the hull without putting weigh on the actual hull, and begin applying heat to the bonding material (don't worry about the silicone)
-move the heat back and forth between the blobs of bonding material until they both start smoking. Shortly after they start smoking you'll hear them starting to release.
-apply a little more heat and they'll pop off all in one piece leaving no residue other than the silicone.
-un thread the bolts from the bottom of the ski out the inserts.
-reach inside and remove the inserts and blobs of bonding material all in solid pieces. *caution, they will retain a little heat, but not for a long period of time.
-clean up the excess silicone remaining and prepare to install the new inserts after you fill the void, which is mentioned elsewhere on several different topics and threads online.

I just wanted to share this being I was dreading this preventive measure needed when modifying these models, and even stock skis in some cases, which have been breaking the hull in this area.

    Keith
