I just noticed the bottoms of the old pistons have some dremel work done to them. Most likely for balancing?

My hunch is some sort of problem with the TPS, possibly intermittent.

Would unhooking it then trying to start it work? Or is the only way to test it is check voltage?

Yes, you should be able to (theoretically) get it to start with the TPS unplugged. Not sure if the presence of the fuel controller will mess with that or anything, though.

Fuel controller only adds fuel to the stock fuel map so it should not interfere with anything.

The tps tested good. I got as much of the old gas out as possible. Been cranking on it for a while with not even a hint of wanting to start. The engine smells flooded with gas now.

I finally found the culprit......after enough backfires cranking on it even without giving it throttle I said screw it, itís worth checking.

    Sheared flywheel key

Very unusual for that to happen. That ski is really a Frankenstein with the all the weird backyard things that have been done to it from the, partial porting, dremeling, tps wire clips, oddball injector, etc. Is that a timing advance after market key? The offset keys are a bit weaker but still should not shear if installed properly.
Was the flywheel loose also? Is the snout of the crank damaged? Anyway, you must have several K$ worth of parts and labor into this thing by now, hope the owner takes better care of it now.

It did not look like an offset key. I bought a straight one to put back in.
