    2005 GPR1300 wonít start

    Hi,

Im working on the above ski for a guy. I rarely work on efi skis so I donít know where to start. First thing I noticed is it has a Riva box on it, oil injection blocked off, and has br9es plugs instead of br8es plugs. Is there any way to test the box to see if it is the reason it isnít starting? Or is unhooking it and plugging it back in as stock the best test method?

    Thank you

    Basic troubleshooting.
If it turns over then check for fuel, spark, compression and go from there.

Compression is there. Spark is there. Plugs are wet and fuel pump is running. Just get back fires when cranking. What do the lights on the controller mean? Green is solid when cranking and yellow flashes. When I let off the start button the yellow turns off and green flashes. How should the controller be set?

If the plugs are wet then its getting fuel and I would not suspect the EFI system.
You can dry the plugs off and try again or better yet, replace them.

The basic starting settings on Riva controller are 5516 and assuming the controller is working then the ski should at least start.
In any case I would NOT adjust the pots on the controller because usually these are arrived at from tuning by the owner.
For troubleshooting purposes you can also bypass the controller and unplug the two plugs going into it and then connect them together.
Just don't return it to the customer this way because the mods this engine has probably requires the controller to add fuel.
Also make sure the gas is not stale or old. Get all the information from the owner you can on events leading up to the problem.

Thanks for the ideas. I tested compression with 2 different gauges. With one I got 90, 100, and 105. The other 130, 135, and 140. Given The symptoms I’m going with the results from the first. That’s the one I always use. The owner said it ran great. Loaded it up and went home. Next time out it wouldn’t start.......but I’ve had owners drop skis off that wouldn’t start and they say it ran fine last time out. I tear the engine apart and there is wrist pin bearings smashed into the top of the piston....

I found ring end gap spec is .018-.024Ē. I could fit a .025Ē feeler gage in the gap on all 3 cylinders. I did notice the rings are concave, not flat. See picture. I havenít seen that before so Iím not real sure what would cause that.

They are manufactured that way. The top of the ring is tapered and so is the mating ring land on the piston.
This utilizes the combustion down forces to force the ring against the cylinder wall and create a seal.
This is pretty common and no disrespect but if you work on skis for other people then you should have enough experience to know this.

    Good luck, Ceril

A half keystone ring. When I put motors together I only pay attention to which side of the ring has a marking on it and ring gap. Most I take apart already have the rings ripped off or gone.

Stupid question.....only the injector from cylinder 3 had the little spacer on the inlet end that goes into the rail. Is it supposed to be that way or not?

I imagine you have to buy the whole injector to get those spacers?
