Karavan tire upgrade 4.80 to 5.30

I need to replace my tires. I have 4.80 x 12 wheels now. I was thinking of going to 5.30. It looks like they are 1.5" taller.

When mounted they would be..75" closer to the fender. There is about 3" of clearance now. Is roughly 2" too close?
    Anyone done this swap?

They have a higher rating and available nearby for less than the price of the smaller size.

At full jounce compression, how close does the underside of the fender get to the old tires?

Said another way, when the tire hits a really, really big pothole or curb hit and the trailer axle suspension compresses as the tire is forced hard upwards, how far up towards the fender can the tread get?

That is your ‘clearance’ between tire and fender. Not when sitting, but at the moment of maximum road impact and tire upward jounce.

I am not aware of any way to measure that.

I could measure the top if the axle to the bottom of the frame but I dont know if the leaf spring setup would allow that much travel

It has the plastic fender flares. It looks like I can add a block to each side and get longer screws.

    Not sure its worth it.

On my Triton Elite double trailer I installed larger wheels and tires (went from 12 to 13 inch IIRC). The tires would sometimes contact the underside of the plastic fenders (black rubber wear marks). I added aluminum spacer blocks to raise the frame above torsion axle mounts by about 1/2”. That also raised the fenders by 1/2”. No more rubbing.

While you're at it, you might look at radial tires.
