I think that the diagram is incorrect and the flow is as Iíve shown it by the red arrow.

The cooling outlet line that I refer to is indicated by the blue line in my attachment.

I fitted an exhaust outlet from a ski boat style and it mad a b8g difference..... as 8t stopped the water pressure and the majority of water going back up the exhaust....
Does the 07 & 08 exhaust reed valve do the same thing or help?

Are you talking about the exhaust reed valve (Its called the air suction valve) on top of the head cover?

Itís good to check that your air suction valve isnít corroded and blocked, I think that this would also cause the exhaust to suck water in.

No I am talking about part# 12022 that is right before the exhaust outlet tip that was on '08 and '09 double water box LXs.

Maybe Waz is talking about something like these exhaust flappers.

If I am snorkeling offshore in the ocean and tied up to a buoy, I may temporarily plug the exhaust.

I honestly donít think that is the problem because the exhaust pipe that interlinks the two water boxes goes higher that the water line to prevent backflow

I think wave action-surge can create problems. Mercruiser inboard outboards with thru the transom exhaust have "exhaust shutters". Look how high an exhaust riser is above the outlet pipe. They are still concerned. Just a thought.

Actually it can be a issue. It could be described as a backwash of sorts. Most i/o boats have a flapper valve in the pipe right after leaving the manifold. My 2.3 's was made of a rubber coated fiberglass material. Unfortunately they are pron to meltdown. The reed valve should help drastically or maybe sirbreaksalot could post a picture of his setup. Remember, alot of early Kawi's true 2 and 3 seaters like the stx's and zxi's had flappers just for this reason.

Iím definitely not ruling it out, but Iíve experienced this problem of water getting on top of my pistons whilst two of us were sitting fishing on my Jetski on a dam at about 06:00 am with not a breath of wind or boat in sight. So they were definitely no waves it was a still still morning out on the dam.
