they recommend a gum out cylinder cleaner to see if the rings r jammed up. Any recommendations?
It has grabbed (scored) No2 & No3 pistons mainly due to running it to hard with that tune in it with no hours. They are forged pistons their gotta loosen up abit.
you will be on your own with this one unless you get on well with your dealer...

You ran the engine another 2 hours with low compression on one or two cylinders?

Which specific Riva MaptunerX tune did you install?

Was the ribbon deleted from the intake manifold?

Never had low compression - ran strong until the last pull. AGR AGT 8500 tune after 5 hours.

No ribbon delete, only GH CAI, Riva Cooling upgrade, Riva Engine Breather.

It has low compression now. Was compression checked right after the first engine seize?

I expect the dealer would have checked compression when you took it in after the first event. Did they show you the numbers?

What octane fuel are you using with the AGR tune?

After the first “fall on its face moment” after a 2 min cooldown cMe right back to life. Never did compression. Always 93 ( 10% ethanol NY)

they said take take it home run the cleanse through it and see what happens.

also told me due to Intake and breather they will not warranty the tear down, obviously I’ll fight that because they admitted on paper and phone they have no evidence of a tune being done.

They will when they review the ECU RPM log history. The ECU log will show sustained RPM time above 8000, while the factory ECU tune limiter is circa 7700.

Yamaha may request the physical ECU be sent to them prior to approving engine warranty work.

My understanding is that none of the aftermarket tune systems are able to edit or erase the RPM log.

Well, the oil in the bilge apparently was caused by excessive piston blow-by, so the piston(s) damage had already occurred by that moment. At least some of it.

Engine shutting itself off may have been the piston(s) seizing in the cylinder bore. Possible hot piston seize? Just speculating on the cause, but certainly some damaged had occurred.

Too bad the compression was not checked right away. May not have changed the eventual outcome though.

Well the results are in - the whole head assembly is fine, head is fine, but there is significant signs of high heat on the valve stems themselves, as well as burn marks on the cylinder heads, also scoring on the walls. Dealer says 100% from the tune ran it extremely lean and this is what happened. Next steps are either new crank case assembly or short block, or sleeve the cylinders.

So does this prove that engine break in is crucial?

  10. #40
Dealer and Yamaha reviewed RPM log and said break in RPM ranges all looked great. The tune caused the motor to run extremely lean which more than likely caused a momentary “dry spot” on the cylinder walls which caused the damage. Curious if anyone else has had issues with the 8500 AGR AGT tune running extremely lean.
