Question Supercharged Skis - what's the hype?

Most of what I see people riding on the forums are supercharged ski... Yamaha, Sea-Doo, Kawa whatever. Then I see tons of issues people have with them. Are they all like this? To be expected? Looking for a little insight on the hype behind a Supercharged ski for the average person. (Racing excluded)

    high performance requires regular maintenance

and engines producing 80hp+ per cylinders will have issues down the road

I'm fond of telling people if their supercharged seadoo was a V8 chevy it would be throwing 640 HP

how much trouble is a car with that kind of power?

unless you are trying to pull a 300 pound water skier up while carrying a 250 pound spotter, stick with an N/A engine, in the long term it will be nearly as enjoyable with a huge fuel and maintenance expense

We have two of the supercharged Yamahas they have hundreds of hours of PERFECT performance on them and no maintenance ever on the superchargers. But to be fair, we usually ride on smoother lakes and rivers, not the ocean.

I think it is generally understood by many of us that you may have more trouble if you spend a lot of time beating up your SC ski in really rough water and you don't learn how to modulate the throttle.

Well considering this is a performance forum, most people here want more performance and that means superchargers or turbos. As someone who has 2 lightly modded and one heavly modded ski, it stands to reason that anything high performance will have more issues. That being said, there are many people who keep there SC skis stock or lightly modded that have zero issues for hundreds of hours.

Excellent replies. I understand this is a performance thread haha but I was just curious that's all - in the future, I'd like to step up and get Supercharged skis but for now, what I have does great for my needs.

So what your saying is that not everyone has issues and that they're not unreliable.

Willing to bet unmodded machines have a lot less issues.

let me put it this way.

I service seadoo rentals for the local vendor.

many of them have over 800 hours on original motors

many of the other 4-tecs I deal with have assorted problems at half the hours.

    my take

    luck plays a factor

changing oil on a regular basis and not abusing the ski leads to the expected service life

    ----

most people cause their own problems

a couple of real world example

using a cheap big box battery

regulator fails, then after a few jump starts, the stator connection starts to melt

then because of over voltage the engine controller is damaged
    --

run the ski aground often and sand contaminates the engine block

then the block overheats and the head gasket starts to leak

have a idiot service your ski and the overfilled oil ruins the air filter

I can go on and on.

treat them right and expect 500+ hours

I'd rate reliability ( don't shoot me guys)

    Yamaha
    seadoo
    Kawasaki

any ski not properly maintained will be a headache

if you lend your ski to a friend, it's gonna cost you 20% of your hours
lend it to a stranger- you'll give up 40% of your hours
