05 GTX gas strut replacement on hatch cover: is there an easy way?

Per the title, the gas strut on the front hatch cover for my 2005 GTX is bad. I did purchase a replacement from Ebay which looks pretty good (here it is: although appears to be about a 1/2" too long - thus it appears that I need to compress this thing a little bit although that is no simple task (this thing is pretty heavy duty).

Is there a simple way to get this to work? I would like to avoid damaging the new part.

The How To Section has just about everything you need.

Read this thread and TSB attached in the first post:

I know the TSB references 2008 skis, but the concept to compress the strut (step 11) and install it is basically the same.
