    99 GSX Hooked a rave

Working on my latest project. 0 compression in a 1999 GSX with 126 hours.

It appears that the rave on the mag side hooked a ring and that was the issue for the 126 hours.

I also did note that the oil pump was set just a bit lean. The head bolts look absolutely perfect. No signs of coming apart.

With all that residue, looks like its never been taken out and cleaned / rebuilt with new orings / bellow.

I would agree. This thing is very virgin. All the bolts have paint on them like its from the factory. I will inspect that bellows and seals.

What was your question? Why are you concerned about the raves when you most likely need an entire rebuild. At least a new top end. And with 126 hrs, might as well do the bottom end while you're at it. And yes, the raves will need to be rebuild or replaced.

I guess I wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts on why it had hooked the valve. Since it is a virgin engine and all. I want to be assured that I find and correct any issue that may of caused this. No reason to blow it up again.

Buy new rave valve and 2x rebuild kits. Rebuild top end. Be sure to have raves cut down for larger size piston or you will catch another ring.

Yep, I agree Chris. I also will be replacing the grey fuel lines. I just never saw a bone stock 947 hook a rave before. There has to be something else that made it happen. I think if I eliminate all the usual things I should be fine. Just like we all mentioned here. Just struggling with being absolutely positive about just a stuck rave valve. The raves both move freely even the one that has the damage. Leads me to believe that it just barely caught it and retracted. But the ring that hooked was already damaged so it did not last long after the damage was done. That would explain the rave having minimal markings and the piston being totally shot like it is.

My thought are ...detonation caused the damage not the rave.

Stop struggling & just rebuild it & move on. It failed & it time to rebuild...its a Seadoo.

I agree with water worx. I’ve never had a 951 that “hooked” a rave. Normally detonation or water injestion when they go down.

No struggling here. It's December in Michigan no reason to rush. Besides, I never put anything back together without finding out to the best of my ability what happened. I will rebuild it if I feel I won't do it again. Just the way I do things.

This thing has no scoring at all, either cylinder, just the one piston with the trashed piston ring. Never seen one like this before. Does not seem like water ingestion to me.

What are the causes of detonation?

    Thanks for your input.
