If done correctly the repair will be stronger than the rest of the hull. Make damn sure they let that thing dry out for weeks before you attempt, any water between the hull half’s will cause serious issues later down the road. Especially if you live in a state that gets freezing in the winter !

Honestly if the inner liner isnt damaged this shouldnt be that big a deal, these nano hulls have been around long enough that shops have gotten the hang of it, plus it isnt a position on the hull that takes alot of pounding when riding, I'd just fix her and enjoy it, just make sure they use epoxy

Do they drain all the oil before flipping the ski over for multiple days?

On the plus side, they can repaint it with something much better and more durable than the stuff Yamaha uses. The Yamaha paint scratches with microfiber cloths

What would it take to allow actual Gel Coat to be applied in place of 'paint'?

While there could be Gel-Coat-like products available, which are spray’able after the fact. . . I don’t think it will be possible to get a genuine "Gel Coat" added onto an existing hull. This is largely due to it being literally a part of the hull itself, and not just a coating. Example, conventional hull fabrication uses a mold, for which Gel Coat resin is the very first layer applied to the mold surfaces (thus becomes the hull’s exterior), followed by an inward build-up of other glass/resin composites, & supporting structures.

In-fact, Gel Coat being a part of hull construction process is why Yamaha’s don’t have Gel Coats. Yamaha’s SMC are semi-cured flat sheets, which are heat-pressed (vacuum pulled) into the hull molds - simply no compatible Gel Coat stage in this advanced fabrication technique.
