    Another Adventure

Just got back from our annual vacation trip to South Padre Island, TX. I've been looking forward to this trip and worked hard to make sure everything went well. Bought two 4-stoke Ultra LX 'Skis and built my own double trailer. Got there uneventfully. Woke up the first morning--rain! Second day--rain! Third day--rain! Fourth day--rain! Finally, on the fifth day it didn't rain, but we had fog dense enough that we had to stay within a mile of shore.

Sixth day seemed pretty nice. Light chop, but there was sea grass everywhere. It was nearly a foot deep all over the ramp. We pushed the 'Skis out about 20 feet before starting them. We still had a lot of trouble picking up grass and cavitating. The impeller would finally catch, but I got concerned because it happened so much on the one I was riding. My wife even commented that it felt like we had 'shifted to third gear'. I was afraid that the impeller was loose and I finally decided to play it safe and quit riding early. We stopped at a dockside restaurant on the way back. When we left, both 'Skis got plugged with sea grass and overheated. We decided to paddle back and quit for the day.

I brought tools with me, but not an impeller spline tool or vise. I contacted several PWC rental places to see if they could help to no avail. Our riding was over for the week--and the weather was beautiful the next two days!

The highlight of the trip was that the second day that we did ride we were joined by a dozen or so dolphins. We stopped and they swam all around, even underneath us.

When I got home, I tore the pump apart and the impeller was torqued properly. I put it back together and took both of them to our local lake and flushed them out pretty well. At least we have had a lot of rain locally in the last month, our lake level has come up 16 feet since August! We can now use two ramps that have been closed for almost 10 years!
