Which coupler is on your trailer?

On my Tritons (double and single, IIRC) the coupler has a single nut on the underside of the mechanism that clamps onto the ball. When hooked up to the tow vehicle with weight on the ball, there should be just enough slack for the latch on top to be released.

What I do is tighten the adjustment nut on the underside until the latch lever on top cannot be released, then back off the nut about 1/2 turn at a time until the latch lever on top can be lifted. Then back off another 1/4 turn or so, if I think it needs a bit more slack.

Effectively the minimum amount of release slack in the nut equals the snuggest fit for the coupler onto the ball. This makes for the least amount of slop and wiggle as the trailer goes down the road, and when reversing with the trailer.

I have noticed that if I get the coupler nut really close to zero slack on one ball, sometimes the latch won’t close when trailer is connected to a different vehicle tow ball. Hence the ‘extra’ 1/4 turn or so of slack.

I also keep a thin layer of hitch lube on the ball to minimize squeaking and friction between coupler and ball.

A plastic ball cover keeps the lube from getting on people’s legs when the trailer is not connected.
