1997 slt 700 wont start after long run...

I have an slt 700 1997.. I have done the wire mod... has the original stator, coil and cdi... after running for a while like 40 minutes... if you turn it off, it will not restart for like 10 minutes, just cranks... seems like a spark problem. When it starts its Iike a switch was flipped and Instantly starts... runs perfect.. never stalls or any miss.... thanks... this group has brought me a long way... I appreciate the help... tony

Which modifcation did you do to the wiring? And why?

If you hold the Bilge button down does the engine re-start?

the wiring to the cdi, I think it was an orange wire that would cause a no start had to cut and put in on another terminal inside the box... it was a bulletin.. I have not tried the bilge button while cranking, but I will thanks..

Been here, done this, beat my head over it. Check ac output voltage of stator excitor coil during a no start. Probably find it to be way low. Failing after it heats up.

Is this the signature failure mode for the original red engine pre-2000 Gen I stators? Weak voltage from the exciter coil?

K447, from what I've personally seen I would have to say yes. I've changed out 2 that would run great all day........unless it was shut off warm then, no start. And several that would only spin around 4000 rpm and never reach full speed. Most of them will ohm out just fine but show low primary ac voltage being generated from the excitor coil. I've also changed a couple with simply no spark that either read open or ohms way off from spec on the excitor coil.

What AC volts level is expected from the Gen I exciter coil in the higher RPM ranges?

Seems like I remember them putting out over 100vac but it's been a while. What I DO remember on the sketchy ones is that they would make 50 volts or so at idle and as you rev them up you can actually watch the voltage drop to 30 or lower instead of increase.

As a side note: I'm actually troubleshooting an intermittent spark on a Fuji right now and collecting ac voltage data for reference.

Do you remember the wire color to check the ac voltage on? Thanks Tony
