Pro 785 Trim Motors & MFDs

I've read through the Polaris PWC Knowledge MFD page, but I'm still confused. Here's what I've been able to piece together regarding the Pro 785 trim motors and MFDs, according to Babbit's webpage:

    '97 trim motor = 4170004
    '97 MFD = 3280278, 8-pin, 3 rpm

    '98 trim motor = 4170018, 6 rpm
    '98 MFD = 3280264, 8-pin, 6 rpm

    '99-01 trim motor = 4170018, 6 rpm
    '99-'01 MFD = 3280307, 12-pin, 6 rpm

So the '97 Pro used the slower 3 rpm trim motor? That's the first time I've heard about this.
What is the difference between 3280264 and 3280307 MFDs? I know that the shape of the oil and gas LCDs are different, but anything else? Why did they switch from 8 to 12 pins? It looks like pins 3,4,5 and 10 have no function on the 12-pin harness.

What are the best substitutes for the '99-'01 Pro MFD 3280307? Here's my list so far but please correct me if this is not the case:

3280307 - this is the stock MFD so it's the best option. Very hard to find these in working condition.
3280264 - all functions work correctly but you need the 8-12 pin adapter cable 2460772?

All other Polaris oval MFDs may work but they are either designed for the slow trim motor, or they wont display engine rpm above 7000 rpm, and some are designed for different fuel tanks and senders so the gas level displays incorrectly?

    Thanks for any advice!

You really don't need to 8-12 pin adapter cable, you would need the 8 pin connecter which easy to find and switch the pins over. Closely follow the wiring diagram to make sure you use the correct pins.

The fuel and oil will display correctly. The tach will go over 7000.

The trim will not display accurately. It doesnt use a position sensor-it's simply timed, thus the rpm difference. You could guess the position, timing it in your head,or only using half the trim display.
