    Spark plug color feedback

    Hello all,

I need some feedback on the color of my spark plugs. I have them tuned a out a bit on the rich side both high and lows but want to make sure i'm not running lean. Pictures were taken right after running at WOT and pulling the lanyard. Engine is a Yamaha 701 twin carb. Plugs have about 1.5 / 2 hours of run time on them.

    Thanks in advance!

OK this is where i'm getting confused. Stock carb settings are 5/8 out on both lows and 5/8 PTO and 1 1/8 mag. I currently runnig 1.5 turns out on both lows and 2 turns out on the highs. it runs great but as I suspected it looks like it's running lean.

What is going on to where I am running lean with my setting turned much richer than stock setting?

Anyone else? I figured I'd exhaust all my resources.

    Thanks in advance.

Their certainly on the lean side. The big question I'm surprised no one ask yet, was if you were doing these plug checks properly. Did you specifically do a high throttle run and kill the engine, coast to shore and check the plugs? If not, you're gonna get a discrepancy in your reading. The spark plugs will always show the most recent engine performance. Also, it's wild you're in the water already in NC. You sir have much larger balls than I

Yes those pictures were taken after running about 15 seconds @ WOT and doing a plug chop, plugs have about 2 hours on them. Carbs are tuned rich compared to stock on both high and low settings. just a though but will running synthetic 2 stroke oil makes plugs appear lean? I'm also thinking of going up from 1.2 to a 1.5 needle and seat. Would the help at all?

And yes, it's been brutal doing this on the water but i'm trying to get this damn thing dialed in before everyone is on the water.
