Advice.. My GP1300R was banned from entering the ocean.

Long story short.. the marine surveyor (government enforced bullcrap) has banned my GP1300R from going into the ocean because it is less than 3 meters long and allegedly has less than 60% buoyancy.

Does anyone have any documentation from yamaha, I can use to fight this crap ?

    Or ideas ?

What does 60% buoyancy actually mean?

If it still floats I'd say it's 100% buoyant

Install a bowsprit to make it longer?

Seriously, are those rules primarily intended for open boats, not PWC?

I just read the pdf . . . seems very PWC-specific indeed. Here are a few random thoughts floating (excuse the pun) in my head.

Design Cat C, and Operational Cat R. Sucks. Seems pretty clear-cut. They don’t want the ski at sea.

60% buoyancy ?? Sorry, I didn’t see that threshold stated at all. Only thing was a PWC needs to be net-positive for 18hrs min, and "right-able" - which they all are these days. Furthermore, since you fall into Cat C, the manufacturer/importer does not need a buoyancy Cert.

The only true laws are the ones that get enforced. For some reason, it looks like skis are on their radar. Has there been an up-tick in ski incidents at sea?

    EDIT :
Sorry for the edit here, but no one has posted below as of yet ...
What I find most unsettling (as off-shore ski fishing myself goes), is that this SAMSA doc amplifies the much broader Merchant Shipping Act. I'm just thinking UK, its territories etc. . . That covers quite is bit of the globe.
That said, I'd like to substantiate the following assertion in this SAMSA pdf :
"Section 72A of the Merchant Shipping Act prohibits the use of vessels less than 3m in length at sea ........."
So I've googled this verbiage and so far can not readily find it in any Merchant Shipping Act (past or present) text. Instead, I can only see this assertion stated in other copies of the SAMSA releases.

As far as I know all skis are positively buoyant in stock form
That means it will not sink even if the ski is full to the top with water
That should easily cover the 60% buoyant rule
