sl 700 tear down (stator/cdi & top end)

Tearing my sl700 down this winter as it lost spark this summer. I have a cdi and stator off a 2001 slh 700 to go in. Also figured while the motor is out i will refresh the top end and gaskets...i may also put the domes and exhaust off the 01 slh on the 96 to squeeze some more juice out of it. I also think im going to install the slh longer pump.

So tore it down and found this..appears the cdi exploded (is this common with these early stators that are known to fail)....aside from that no real surprises other then it needs a big clean up

I have seen 3-4 of the old style CDI for 700's explode that capacitor. Don't recall any 3 cyl cdi do that.
Usually the Gen 1 stators have high resistance on one of the tests-the one running 96 700 that I had high resistance would not rev over like 3500 rpm.

Factory Polaris pistons are stamped "ELCO".
I do beleive the standard pistons are stamped with the size 80.89 (81mm cylinder bore-then with piston clearance, comes to the 80.89 piston)
The piston stamped 81.14 will be the .25 oversized piston. cylinder should measure 81.25mm.

You could look up parts here,http://parts.polarisind.com/Assemblies.asp
may find Polaris pistons on E-bay.

Awesome thanks casey so one standard bore and one .25 over is what i need then. Think just a hone and new rings pistons? walls feel good to me and compression was still over 120s
