    1200 Engine Knock at idle

I just picked up a 2002 SUV1200. Gage says 275 hours but Compression is 115-125. It runs fine, but has a clack at idle... sounds like piston slap or?? Could it be in the pump or is there a potential piston ring issue? It still has the oil injection hooked up....was surprised to see that!

    Inspect with Camera

Remove plugs and look inside cylinder with a digital inspection camera. Harbor freight tools sells the camera for $80. Get a 20% off coupon and save $16. Look to see if Wave Eaters were installed to avoid power valve problems. Remove & clean the power valve

Thanks, can do that. Motor is a NPV though.

Had a friends do this. Turned out it was the rod to crank bearing letting go. No sign of it visually, kepts digging deeper till we found the problem!

It does sound like worn big ends.

Quick check is to pull all three plugs and turn the engine over by hand. Use something long down each plug hole that won't harm the piston like a pencil (not the pointy end!). When each piston gets to top dead center rock the crank back and forth and push down on the crown with the pencil.

if the big ends are seriously worn or collapsed there will be a point just past TDC where the crank starts to pull the piston back down the bore, if you can push the piston down slightly without the crank moving, it's bad news

Alternatively remove the head and push down on the pistons by hand as they start to travel back down the bores. Check the head and piston crowns for contact (the knocking)

Take the $16 you would save at HF (love HF!) and get an inspection camera online

275 hrs... thats a lot if it's never been rebuilt. I would tear it down and inspect crank/pistons.

Are you sure the sound is coming from inside the motor? I had a 1999 1200 XLT which is basically the same thing just a little smaller and the damn thing made all kinds of clanking at idle. Mostly was from a worn out prop. Does the sound go away when you give it a little gas? If so that could be your problem too. Once it starts spinning it builds centrifugal force and balances it self out.
