Catastrophic engine meltdown!
Was digging my bonus mid november ride the other day when my once trusted spark came to an abrupt stop. Maybe sucked up a rope? I wish! Walked it 3 miles back to the ramp, loaded it up, and went home. Yesterday I opened the hull and my mouth went dry as I observed pools of oil in the bottom of the hull. The huge crack in the engine block behind the starter reconfirmed my worst fear. The lower end exploded! Really? At 160 hours and regular oil changes?
Weird thing was I was also thankful. Thankful that this didnt happen on my once in a lifetime 2000 mile journey. Yeah Im the guy that posted:
Seadoo Spark...a true long distance runner!
Maybe not so much. I have changed from being one of the sparks biggest cheerleader to a guy questioning its reliability.
Looks like I can pick up a used engine but it seems a litle pricey. This is where i need your help. Does anyone know of a good how to manual or video on how to switch out spark engines?
Also, does anyone know where I can get a used engine for a decent price?
I'm bummed!Last edited by K447; 11-19-2016 at 12:53 PM. Reason: link added

While the spark engine is closed loop cooling , the exhaust is not. Did you happen to let it freeze up of which could have let the exhaust put undo pressure on the block leading to a crack ... then loss of oil failure ? If there was exhaust freezing taking place it could have distorted the shape ??

Sorry to hear that
I have the complete workshop manual in PDF format, I'm pretty sure it covers the procedure of removing and installing the engine in the hull. PM me your email address and I'll send it of to you.

ouch.
swapping the engine doesn't look too tough, I thiong gettting the hull apart would be a little more aggravating.
Same old same old, pull pump and driveshaft,,yayayayayayayayaya
easy to lift the engine out.
Haven't seen any alignment tools yet..but this was my first season doing anything on a spark past a wear ring.
a bit of a pain from a service point of view, and frankly speaking, the spark could be a throw away ski after you look at the cost of a replacement short block and labor, a new one doesn't seem to be that far off the mark.

Nmpeter,(or anyone else with engine swap out experience)
I was reading the manual sent by rxp-swe (thanks so much rxp-swe!) and it was saying to shim if alignment is off. Shim what? My hope is that if i disconnect the engine at the engine side of the motor mount brackets (3 bolts per) i wont need to reallign.
