    Bought another one - 97 SL780

    $500 with a nice trailer.

Plan was to evaluate the condition and then decide to gut it for the engine and such for later use in one of my other 780SLTs, or flip it.

So the owner reported the following.
-took ski to mechanic who replaced all the hoses and rebuilt the carbs and the fuel pump
-took ski to lake and ran it for less than an hour and experienced "horrible sound in pump like a differential going out"
-decided to sell rather than invest any more cash.

    Findings so far.
    -compression is good at 135
-hoses are all junk, clear blue stuff and some gray hose, but not old, on the gas supply from tank to pump.
-looking up in the pump it is a 5-blade stator, and 3 of the stator leading edges have 1" chunks missing out of them.
-MFD is alive, but missing segments
-gas shut-off is non-functional and has been bypassed
-piston heads look dry, this matches the owner's assertion it was runnign very fast. No damage though.

So, I think he got unlucky and sucked something up into the pump and it rattled the impeller/stator and did its damage but is now gone.

Got lucky on that maybe as it looks to me like the ski would have burned down if that hadn't happened.

    Plans are...
    -tear off the fuel rail
-rebuild carbs with genuine gear from Watcon
    -rebuild pump
-take MFD apart and resurrect it
    -retune for safe RPM
-sell for profit (I am not a fan of the 2-person hulls)

Nice score! Looking for a backup/parts 750 myself.

    Cheers!

Oh I get that they are fun.

I built up a 95 SLX780 and it was lots of fun...by myself.

But put even just my daughter on it with me and it became a top-heavy tip-o-meter that was no fun at all.

Couple that with the highly abbreviated range and I decided to stick with the SLTs.

OK, took the pump out and...well...yeah...I bet it *did* make a noise!

It looks like the shaft is fine, which is good because it appears to be different than the shafts on all my SLTs as well as the shaft from the parted out SLX.

The impeller stub-shaft is shot, but appears to be the same as the SLTs...so I have spares.

Actually, I think I can take the stator section and impeller from a SLT and use the SL780 shaft and it will work.

    In other news...

-the fuel shut off had NOT been bypassed...and was leaking like a sieve. Fortunately I have some Watcon replacements.
-the PTO no spark was solved by hacking off half an inch and re-screwing the plug-hood on
-I think the carbs are humped...whoever did the rebuild damaged many of the diaphragm cover screws...so God knows what else he messed up. I'll be taking the fuel system apart as soon as I get my kits from Watcon (John is currentlly at Havasu) It won't run without some choke, even after warm.

This is the first ski I have had with the choke on the left handle. The lever stays in whatever position you put it in, is this normal? Seems like it ought to be spring return.

2 seaters have their place. Great for wave jumping and smooth water, but not a stable ski in any kind of chop if you're looking for speed.

    I love my SLT 750/780.

Yes the choke lever stays where you put it. There's a tension spring under the lever to keep it there. It's good if you ever need the choke to diagnose a lean hesitation or limp the ski back to shore.

Minpinchaser, those metal pieces are the inner bearing races. Completely came apart on that pump.

I finally dragged the SL780 I picked up cheap into the garage tonight to start looking it over.

Tank scopes out very clean, turns over, appears to just need a new pump (I posted pics of the utterly destroyed pump last year) so let's take another good look in the cylinders.

    W...T...F?!?!

I did not see this damage last year, and I doubt it happened in the 30 seconds worth of test run I did at the sellers.

So something got loose in there. I am considering yanking the mag jug and taking a better look around, but based on:
    -the fact I know I don't like these 2-person skis (re the older SLX780 I had I didn't like)
-the proper solution for this engine is now for it to come out...apart...and re-done
-I have 2 SLT bodies waiting for engines

I think I am gonna rip the parts I want out of this ski and junk it. I only paid $500 for this one with the trailer, so keeping the engine, E-box, MFD, bilge pump, and handlebar controls is still a win IMO.

Anyone need anything off one of these?

So got the engine out and took a look in the MAG cylinder, sure enough, got some metal in there that almost certainly is bearing race metal.

Also got a free 10mm wrench in the sump.

If anyone wants any parts off this that I am not keeping, you have til Friday to ask.

    96 SL780
