    Riding the Big Swells

Somewhere in the Pacific Northwest there's a wind warning in effect. With winds gusting from 15 to 25 knots, all boats are off the water ...except for the 3ftDeep Sea-Doos! This ride was a once-a-year blast with 5 to 10 ft waves!

I know the GoPro flattens it a bit and no offense but I don't even see a 5ft wave. Besides, "swells" are generally more defined waves rolling into shore with a nice pattern. This just looks like big windy chop from all directions.

Still, always love your videos so...

This is what a 10FT+ Florida swell looks like each winter: (pic below)

We don't get as big as the PNW does but once every couple years we get monsters that are an honest 15' to 18' face. When it gets that big, slowly rolling over them send you air born (one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three - smack!). So I tone it down and get in front of waves and let it close-out on me and ride it to shore. Getting back to deep water is tricky as you end up fighting 8FT walls of white wash - cavitation central. I've lost it on the standups or small sitdowns (X4) but if I lose it on the big skis, it will be a total loss or a reef.

You're right about losing the perspective on the GoPro. You lose a lot. Freeze the frame around 1:50 or 1:57; you get a much better perspective. I'm wearing the camera on my head, so look at the difference in height relative to Chris' head (who's taller than me). Those were big, but not the biggest swells. Unfortunately, we don't always get usable shots when the waves are the biggest. If I could get Chris to start wearing a head strap, maybe he'd be able to capture more great shots -with me in them! Thanks for your comment.

150 Speedsters are pretty awesome in swells. Had a blast a few years back on an unexpected windy day. Did your arms turn into a popeye look a like?

The arms definitely get sore after, but the biggest problems happen with the legs (the main "shock absorbers"). Neither of us could walk properly for the next 48 hours. But of course, it was worth it!

Every fall my buddys and I go up to Lake Huron when the wind is coming from the south and we get some good 6-10's. Its a good time.
